It is with deep regret the Officers and Members of the Upper Makefield Fire Company announce the passing of past Firefighter, President & Secretary, Merwyn Claar.
Merwyn B. Claar of Newtown died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2015, at St. Mary Medical Center, Langhorne. He was 81.
Born in McKeesport, Pa., Mer was a 39 year resident of Newtown.
Mer was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during the Korean War. He was an active member of the Newtown United Methodist Church serving in the choir, as an usher, the Senior Youth Group advisor and as the Sunday School superintendent. He was a member of the Upper Makefield Fire Co. and a former scuba diver and member of the Rescue, Recovery and Salvage Team in Pittsburgh.
Mer was a retired telecommunications manager with AT&T serving for 37 years and he was stationed in Alaska above the Arctic Circle for several months. He was a former Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader.
Mer was the son of the late Paul and Gertrude Claar; and father of the late Lt. Matthew Claar, USN. He was the loving husband of 53 years to Jennie Levitzki Claar; father of Martin G. Claar; and the grandfather of six. Mer is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Jean Claar and Molly Claar; and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to Mer’s memorial life celebration from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, and to his 11 a.m. memorial service at the Swartz/Givnish Funeral Home, 323 Washington Ave., Newtown, PA 18940. Interment will follow in Washington Crossing Methodist Church Cemetery.
